Smart Lights Done Right

June 28, 2024

Welcome to the ultimate guide on transforming your home with smart lighting. We want to focus on the solutions that are most helpful in creating a comfortable, energy-efficient, and aesthetically pleasing environment. Whether you're just beginning your journey into home automation or looking to expand your existing setup, understanding the nuances of smart lighting is essential. Let's jump in!

Imagine your lights gradually brightening in the morning, simulating a natural sunrise to help you wake up gently and feel more refreshed. In the evening, your lights gradually dim, creating a calming atmosphere that can help you unwind and prepare for a good night’s sleep. Sounds perfect, right? But how exactly do you get there?

Navigating the world of smart lighting can be daunting with so many different products and technologies to choose from. With the right components and strategies, you can create a seamless and totally customizable lighting environment that works for you. In this article, we'll explore the best scenarios for using smart bulbs versus smart switches to help you understand the advantages and limitations of each solution. You want make the most out of your lighting setup after all.

We'll delve into how to effectively automate various forms of low voltage lighting and discuss the versatility of LED strips for both creative and practical applications. You'll find tips on where and how to use these fixtures for the best effect. You'll also learn which devices you can use to control and automate this type of lighting.

And that's not all. We'll also take a look at the unique considerations for outdoor lighting, from enhancing security to creating the perfect evening ambiance. By the end of this guide, you'll have a comprehensive understanding of how to optimize your smart lighting setup with the best products for your individual needs.

Smart Switch or Smart Bulb?

Smart switches offer a seamless way to integrate modern technology into your home lighting system, providing convenience and enhanced efficiency. By incorporating features such as scheduling and automation, smart switches allow you to tailor your lighting to your daily routines.

Imagine you're relaxing at home, hosting a movie night with friends. With smart switches, you can program a "movie night" scene that dims the overhead lights, activates accent lighting behind the TV, and turns off unnecessary lights in the room. Activate that scene anytime with a single tap on a switch, your smartphone, or even a voice command. This eliminates the need to manually adjust multiple switches or dimmers every night. You can even schedule this scene to activate automatically at a designated time. Set it and forget it!

Why choose a smart switch?

  • Savings: Smart switches are more cost effective. A single smart switch can control multiple lights or fixtures in a room. It's cheaper to make your lights smarter with just one device than replacing each bulb with a smart bulb, especially in rooms with many light sources. This approach not only reduces the initial investment but also simplifies the setup process. You only need to install and configure one device instead of many.
  • Compatibility: Your existing fixtures may have integrated LED's or specialty bulbs. Smart switches work with a variety of bulb types, allowing you to keep the style of your existing light fixtures. This flexibility means you can enjoy the benefits of smart lighting without the hassle and expense of replacing all your current bulbs.
  • Simple Control: With smart switches, you maintain the traditional wall switch control. Anyone can operate the lights even if they are not familiar with smart home technology or don’t have access to the smart lighting app. Smart bulbs become unresponsive if the physical switch is turned off. Smart switches ensure consistent control via the app or voice assistant regardless of the physical position of the switch. This intuitive control method enhances accessibility for all household members and guests, making it easy to adjust lighting settings without relying solely on smart devices or apps.
  • Responsiveness: Smart bulbs that run on Wi-Fi can be less responsive than devices using Z-Wave or Zigbee. Wi-Fi congestion often causes delays and connectivity issues, which can be frustrating when you expect lights to turn on or off instantly. Responsiveness is crucial for smart lighting, and this is where Z-Wave technology shines. There are very few Z-Wave bulbs available, so opting for a Z-Wave switch is the easiest way to ensure a responsive smart lighting network. With the advent of Z-Wave Long Range, your options are better than ever. While standard Z-Wave creates a stable mesh network, Z-Wave Long Range allows you to connect devices directly to the hub at greater distances (think 1000+ feet).
  • Updated Wiring: Neutral wires are usually found in homes built after the mid-1980s and are required by most modern US electrical codes. A neutral wire is required, as this is what provides a small amount of power to the smart switches, allowing them to stay connected even when the switch is turned off, so your scenes and automations still run seamlessly even when the connected fixture is turned off. Smart bulbs, on the other hand, can no longer be powered or controlled if the connected switch is turned off, as power is fully cut to the smart bulb.

In summary, if your primary goal is to automate your on/off and dimming functions, with color or temperature control being less of a priority, smart switches offer a practical solution. They seamlessly integrate with your existing fixtures and provide straightforward control over basic lighting functions. This makes them an ideal choice for enhancing convenience and efficiency without the need to replace every bulb with a smart one. However, if you seek more advanced color or temperature control, smart bulbs may better suit your needs, offering a broader range of customization options to create the perfect ambiance for any occasion.

    Why choose smart bulbs?

    • Color Control: Smart bulbs are great when you want to add color control to your lighting system. Most models come with millions of colors and temperature adjustment. Whether it’s a colorful theme for a vibrant party or a soft, warm glow for a cozy movie night, smart bulbs are the easiest way to get creative with your lights.
    • Installation: For renters and frequent movers, smart bulbs can be the simplest way to enhance home lighting. Unlike smart switches, which often require a visit from an electrician or at least basic electrical know-how, smart bulbs can simply be screwed into existing fixtures. Most of us have changed a bulb in a fixture before so we know it's a quick and hands-off swap. This allows renters to enjoy remote control or customizable brightness and color options without violating lease agreements or investing in modifications they can't take with them. When it's time to move, smart bulbs can be easily unscrewed and packed up. This flexibility makes smart bulbs an excellent investment for anyone who anticipates frequent relocation, providing a portable and adaptable smart home.
    • No Neutral: Most smart switches require a neutral wire at the switch box to properly function but some older homes may not have the necessary wiring. Smart bulbs offer a workaround in such cases, as they can be installed directly into existing light fixtures without requiring any changes to the wiring infrastructure. This flexibility allows you to automate a location that you may not otherwise be able to with an older home, providing a convenient solution for modernizing your lighting system without extensive renovations or rewiring.

If you decide to go with smart bulbs, there are a few considerations to keep in mind. When a traditional wall switch is turned off, it cuts power to the smart bulb, rendering it completely useless. When power is removed to the bulb, all the advanced features of the smart bulb — such as remote control, scheduling, and color changing — become inaccessible until the switch is turned back on. To mitigate this issue, homeowners can replace traditional switches with smart switches or install smart remotes.

Smart switches allow you to maintain continuous power to the smart bulbs, ensuring they remain functional and controllable at all times. For those in older homes without a neutral in the switch box, Zooz offers the ZEN51 Dry Contact Relay or the ZEN52 Double Relay, both of which can be installed in the light fixture box where you will always have access to the neutral wire. These relays are also equipped with smart bulb mode, so that even if the physical switch is in the off position, it will not cut power to the bulb.

Before investing in smart bulbs, it's crucial to ensure that your smart home hub supports them. Compatibility is key to taking full advantage of their capabilities, as it allows you to integrate them seamlessly with your existing smart home ecosystem. Most smart bulbs today utilize either Wi-Fi or Zigbee protocols. With Wi-Fi, you may encounter congestion and slow response times if you have too many devices on your Wi-Fi network; with Zigbee, you'll need to ensure your hub of choice supports the Zigbee protocol, along with considering the wall switch issue. In many cases, you will be required to purchase an additional bridge device to connect these bulbs to your smart home hub.

In a nutshell, while smart bulbs have their perks, we believe smart switches are usually the smarter and more reliable option for home lighting. These switches work seamlessly with other smart devices and hubs, and they're a cost-effective choice because one switch can control multiple bulbs.

Even if you choose smart bulbs, adding a smart switch along with them provides the simple control from the wall that is missing in standard smart bulb installations, and with smart bulb mode you ensure your smart bulbs are always accessible. With smart switches, you maintain control over your lighting system at all times, ensuring that your smart home setup remains functional and efficient.

    Low Voltage Outdoor Lights

Smart relays are a powerful and versatile component in the world of home automation, offering solutions for a variety of specific lighting needs. One prime application for smart relays is controlling low voltage AC lights, such as landscape lighting or garden features.

With smart relays like the Zooz Universal Relay or the Zooz MultiRelay, you can seamlessly integrate your outdoor lighting into your overall smart home ecosystem. You'll get precise control and scheduling to enhance security, ambiance, and curb appeal. Whether you want to illuminate pathways, highlight architectural elements, or create dramatic lighting effects, smart relays provide the flexibility and functionality to bring your outdoor spaces to life with ease and efficiency.

The Zooz MultiRelay works particularily well in these scenarios. It allows you to manage up to three separate zones of lighting independently, ensuring that your outdoor space is illuminated exactly how you want it. Imagine having one zone for your garden, another for your patio, and a third for your driveway. With the MultiRelay, you can control each of these zones individually, tailoring the lighting to suit your needs and preferences.

Want to set the mood for a summer evening gathering? Set your garden lights to turn on at dusk, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. Need to enhance security? Set your driveway lights to turn on automatically whenever your security sensors detect motion. You can even put each zone on a timer, ensuring your lights are on only when you want them, which saves energy and reduces your electricity bill.

The Zooz MultiRelay not only allows you to automate lighting schedules and remotely control your outdoor lights, but it also integrates seamlessly with your existing smart home system. This means you can use voice commands to adjust your lights, create custom scenes that combine lighting with other smart devices, and monitor everything from a single app for ultimate convenience.

    Motion Activated Lights

Smart relays are also handy when it comes to motion-activated lights, providing an added layer of security and convenience. The Zooz Dry Contact Relay is recommended for this application. The output from the motion sensor is wired to the control input of the Z-Wave relay, which allows the sensor to trigger the device when motion is detected and provide a notification to your hub. Turn on the lights automatically whenever motion is detected or create more fine-tuned rules so the lights come on only at night for example.

    Commercial Dimming

A 0-10 V dimmer, like the Zooz Dimmer, is a specialized lighting control solution ideal for spaces requiring precise and smooth dimming capabilities. This type of dimmer is specifically designed to work with 0-10V dimming fixtures, which are commonly used in commercial settings, such as offices, conference rooms, and retail spaces, as well as in high-end residential applications.

The primary advantage of 0-10V dimmers is their ability to provide a wide range of dimming levels, from full brightness down to a very low, subtle light. This makes them perfect for environments where adjusting the light intensity to suit different tasks or moods is crucial.

The Zooz 0-10V dimmer is designed for settings that utilize these specific low voltage LED fixtures, as they offer flicker-free dimming and greater energy efficiency than older model fluorescent lighting. For instance, in an office environment, you can adjust the lighting to optimal levels for productivity during the day and then dim them down for a more relaxed atmosphere during meetings or presentations. Similarly, in retail spaces, you can highlight products with bright, focused light during peak hours and create a softer ambiance as the store closes.

Another advantage of 0-10V dimmers is their compatibility with building automation systems. They can be integrated with sensors, timers, and other smart controls to automate lighting based on occupancy, time of day, or other environmental factors. This not only enhances convenience and energy savings but also extends the lifespan of your lighting fixtures.

Even better? The Zooz 0-10V dimmer is a Z-Wave Long Range device, which means it can connect with your ZWLR supporting hub at large distances of over a thousand feet. When considering upgrading your lighting control system, a 0-10V dimmer is a robust choice for achieving targeted, efficient, and versatile lighting control in any professional or high-end residential setting.

    LED Strip Lights

When it comes to controlling your low voltage DC LED light strips, you might instinctively reach for a smart wall dimmer like the best-selling Zooz wall controls. These dimmers are popular for their ease of use and integration with smart home systems. However, these models are actually not rated for use with LED strips and connecting them to unsupported loads like these is not safe and may cause equipment damage.

The main problem lies in the nature of low voltage LED strip lighting systems. These systems operate with low voltage power transformers, which are responsible for converting high voltage AC power to the low voltage DC power required by the LED strips. Unfortunately, these transformers can produce power spikes that are harmful to the electronics in your smart switches. Over time, these power spikes can cause damage, leading to malfunctioning or completely inoperative switches.

To avoid these issues, we recommend using a dedicated smart RGBW (Red, Green, Blue, White) dimmer designed specifically for LED strip lights. These dimmers are built to handle the unique power requirements and fluctuations associated with LED strip lighting. By using a dedicated RGBW dimmer, you can ensure that your lighting system operates smoothly and reliably, without risking damage to your smart home equipment.

Additionally, RGBW dimmers offer enhanced control features that are not typically available with standard smart wall dimmers. These features include the ability to adjust individual colors, create custom lighting scenes, and synchronize your lighting with other smart devices in your home. This added functionality can greatly enhance your home’s ambiance and allow for more creative lighting setups.

For example, you can set a relaxing blue hue for a calm evening at home, a festive combination of colors for a party, or a crisp white light for task lighting. The versatility of RGBW dimmers makes them suitable for both decorative and functional lighting applications. These dimmers often come with features like preset scenes, color-changing modes, and remote control capabilities, further enhancing their usability and convenience.

Installing low voltage DC light strips with an RGBW dimmer is relatively straightforward and can be a DIY project for many homeowners. By choosing an RGBW dimmer for your lighting setup, you can enjoy the benefits of versatile, energy-efficient, and highly customizable lighting that enhances the beauty and functionality of your space.

While the Zooz RGBW Dimmer has been recently discontinued, an upgraded, 800 series version is in the works. Let us know if you're interested, and we'll update you as soon as it's released!

    Outlets and Receptacles

With their ease of installation and broad compatibility, smart plugs are an excellent way to make your lamps smarter. Whether you're looking to automate holiday decorations, create a cozy atmosphere with string lights, optimize the use of your floor lamps, or streamline your morning routine with smart appliances, smart plugs offer a simple yet powerful solution.

By integrating smart plugs into your home, you not only gain control over your devices but also enjoy added convenience, safety, and energy savings. Many of the models we carry provide energy monitoring data you can use to analyze power use and fine tune the use of your lights. With smart plugs, your living space becomes a smarter, more efficient environment. Here are some scenarios where smart plugs are particularly useful.

    Holiday Lights

One of the most popular uses for smart plugs is controlling holiday lights. Instead of manually plugging in and unplugging your Christmas lights or other seasonal decorations, you can schedule a Zooz Smart Plug to turn on and off automatically. It's a great way to take another thing off of your daily to-do list. Imagine coming home to a beautifully lit house without having to fumble with cords and switches.

    String Lights

String lights are often used to create a cozy or festive atmosphere on patios, balconies, or in bedrooms. They can be effortlessly controlled with a smart plug, especially if plugged into an outlet that's not easily accessible. These lights can transform your outdoor spaces into inviting areas for evening gatherings or create a warm ambiance in your living areas.

With outdoor rated smart plugs like the Zooz Outdoor Plug or the Double Outdoor Plug, you can set schedules to turn the lights on at sunset and off at bedtime. Now you can always have the perfect lighting without thinking about it. Integrate smart plugs with voice assistants like Alexa or Google Assistant to control your lights intuitively on demand. This is particularly useful when your hands are full or when you want to impress your guests with a seamless lighting setup.

    Floor Lamps

We often wish our lamp had a built-in timer. Just connect it to a smart plug and automate your lamp's operation to fit your daily routines. For example, you can have the lamp turn on in the morning to wake you up or turn off automatically when you leave the house. It's convenient but also contributes to energy efficiency. And if you have multiple lamps in a room, smart plugs allow you to control them simultaneously, creating a cohesive lighting scheme with minimal effort.

    Summary

Exploring the various options for smart lighting reveals the amount of possibilities for adding real value to your home. From smart bulbs and smart switches to outdoor lighting and smart plugs, each option offers unique benefits tailored to different needs and preferences. Smart bulbs provide versatility and convenience with their wide range of colors and remote control features, making them perfect for dynamic and adjustable lighting. They work best when paired with a smart switch. Smart switches and dimmers, on the other hand, integrate seamlessly with existing fixtures. They offer a streamlined and user-friendly approach to automated lighting control. Finally, smart plugs extend automation capabilities to a variety of devices, ensuring that your home is not only well-lit but also energy-efficient and easy to manage.

Ultimately, the right smart lighting solution for your home depends on your specific requirements and how you envision your ideal lighting setup.
