Follow the appropriate diagram to wire the Universal Relay according to your application. If you don't see a diagram describing your set-up, please contact us to request help with the installation. Remember to always turn power off at the breaker before handling the wires. Never apply any voltage to the Sw input terminals!
Once you've completed the wiring, power the Universal Relay up with a USB C and a standard power adapter (sold separately) or a direct connection to 12 / 24 V power source.
Now add the Universal Relay to your hub: initiate inclusion (pairing mode) and click the Z-Wave button on the device 3 times quickly. The LED indicator will blink to indicate communication and stay on for 2 seconds to confirm inclusion.
You’ll most likely see 3 new on/off devices in your app:
2 channels for on/off control of each relay
1 master node to control all relays at the same time and to access and adjust advanced settings in (if your hub supports parameter input)
Zooz ZEN17
We have a large property with a creek running through it, we’ve built several bridges and wanted them lighted. About a year ago I started building solar lighting systems, that were controlled and automated by our Apple Home / Home Assistant system. I’ve had good success with Z-Wave Long Range, and needed a 12V device so I decided to try the Zooz ZEN17 dual relay. The setup was very easy, and now having two Z-wave controlled switches, I added a second ambient light to the primary bridge lights.
The ergonomics were a little awkward, while wiring was fairly straightforward, I would prefer all connectors be the same. The load / relay connections easily handled the 12 gauge outdoor wire I used, though the power in connections struggled to fit a 14 gauge (to be fair, they only power the unit itself which needs less than an Amp and 16 was fine), Wago/Lever connectors made for a clean setup. Also the slide clips on the back didn’t line up with my box mounts, so I used Velcro in the outdoor box I mounted everything in.
The performance of the ZEN17s shined, I easily set it up with the QR code into HA Zwave JS, both relays and a master show up as controls (I’d like to see a sleepy voltage meter in one of these to monitor my solar charging). Having dual relays inspired some creativity and besides the bridge lites, I added a couple ‘mood lights’ that create an outdoor room, very nice summer evening spots. The two bridges I’m using these at are 230 and 320 feet from my indoor ZWA-2 controller / antenna, so it also goes through a stucco exterior wall, the connection has been very reliable.
Though deducted one star for ergonomics, performance was 5 stars, and I would highly recommend the Zooz ZEN17 should you need a Z-Wave relay — it’s one of the few ZWLRs that can run on 12VDC — so they’re great for a solar project like this.
I used the Zen 35 and the Zen 17 to set up multiple modes with my cabinet lighting. Switch # 5 (the top switch) turns on all the lights upper (above cabinet) and lower (below cabinet). Switch # 1 turns on the upper (above cabinet lights) and switch # 2 turns the upper lights off. Switch # 3 turns the lower (below cabinet lights) on and switch # 4 turns them off. The relay was essential to create this sequence.
I also have several scenes that are controlled by a pir sensor (Zse18)
When I enter the house after 8PM the cabinet lights come on for 5ive minutes.
Between 11PM and 5AM if the pir is triggered (most likely by someone heading to the bathroom) the lights go on for five minutes @ 20% brightness.
I’ve had a great experience with the Zooz 800 Series Z-Wave Long Range Universal Relay (ZEN17 800LR). I’m using it with Hubitat to control my garage door opener, and it’s been solid and reliable.
The dual relay design (with both NO and NC options) makes it very flexible, and it handled the garage door integration without any issues. Once configured, it works exactly as expected—fast response times and consistent operation.
Z-Wave Long Range support is a real advantage, especially for installations like a garage where distance or interference can sometimes be a concern. Connectivity has been stable with no dropouts.
I also appreciate how compact and versatile the unit is. Even though I’m currently using it for a single purpose, it’s clear this relay could be used in a wide range of automation scenarios.
Overall, this is a dependable, well-engineered device that integrates nicely with Hubitat. If you need a flexible relay for automation projects, it’s an excellent option.
I installed a Ratgdo but I wasn't able to use any function that would drain the capacitor too quickly in the wall panel. So I decided to use this relay and connect it to one of my remotes. It works great!
This is a very versatile device that I have used as a dry contact device (drape control, wired door contact interfase) also as a power relay. Zooz makes good reliable products
