Your smoke or carbon monoxide detector has been tripped. Luckily, you’re at work and the kids are at school. But wouldn’t you want to know what’s happening inside your home, especially if it’s a fire or CO leak? That’s where the Ecolink Firefighter comes in: a one-of-a-kind device that, once triggered via audio alarm, recognizes the event and instantly sends you a text or email notification. Just pair it with your Z-Wave hub and mount it to get started.
In addition to wirelessly reporting your triggered smoke and CO detectors, the Firefighter comes with several other helpful safety features. The device is protected against tampering, so you’ll get an alert if the cover is removed unexpectedly. When the battery is running low, the device will tell you it needs to be replaced. Equipped with the latest Z-Wave Plus 500 series chip offering longer range and stronger connectivity, rest assured that communication will go through.
The Ecolink Firefighter Z-Wave Plus smoke and CO audio detector is one of those home automation devices that people might not get too excited about, but to me it is an excellent device that could be of great use to plenty of home automation do-it-yourselfers. While there are plenty of approaches available to get smoke and carbon monoxide detection integrated into your Z-Wave infrastructure, this is a simple and affordable way to tie in an existing whole-home system. It allowed me to keep my seven traditional interconnected smoke detectors in place and functional, while adding that extra layer of protection thanks to SmartThings.

Be sure to include the Firefighter to your Z-Wave network before mounting the device. Start by moving it as close as possible to the installation location while ensuring it’s within direct range of your Z-Wave hub (see mounting instructions below for more details on optimal location). This will help verify that the device is within reliable range and establish a communication route between the device and hub.
Put your Z-Wave hub into inclusion/pairing mode (see your hub’s instructions for how to enable inclusion mode). Then, open the Firefighter’s cover and press the Learn button inside for 1 second. If the LED indicator blinks non-stop at this point, the device has not been included successfully and you’ll need to repeat the steps above.
When choosing a location for the unit, pick a smoke or CO detector that you would like to monitor. The Firefighter must be installed within 6 inches of the smoke/CO detector with the microphone pointed in the direction of the detector (see the illustration in the manual).
Make sure the chosen surface is flat, clean, and dry. Verify that the device is oriented correctly according to the instructions above, ensuring that the arrow on the device is facing the smoke/CO detector. Attach the mounting plate to the surface using the included adhesive tape or mounting screws and slide the Firefighter onto the plate.
